How to Group Text Without Showing Everyone’s Phone Number

A keypad phone at the centre of concentric rings, linked by threads to six blank name cards.

To run a group text without showing members’ personal numbers to one another, use a service that relays messages through a shared group number. Klal Chat sends posts from the group’s number and identifies the sender by name. The organizer and service still need member numbers to operate the group.

First decide where replies should go

A shul announcement list and a neighborhood chessed group may need different reply arrangements. The shul organizer may want a notice followed by separate responses. The chessed group may need everyone to coordinate together without exchanging personal contact details.

These are different communication patterns. Hiding a recipient list does not, by itself, create a conversation that everyone can follow. Before selecting a service, decide whether members’ replies should go to the whole group or privately to the organizer.

The distinction appeared in an Imamother discussion about replacing GroupMe: one request concerned organizer-only notices with hidden numbers; others needed a shared conversation.

For a camp pickup notice, decide whether a parent's response should inform everyone or reach a separate organizer contact. Put that instruction in the invitation. Number privacy and reply destination are two separate decisions.

How a shared group number keeps contact details separate

In Klal Chat, members save the group’s number as a contact. They send their posts to that number, and the service sends each post to the other members. Those recipients see the group number, rather than a list of personal numbers.

The sender’s name accompanies the post so the conversation makes sense. For example, a volunteer can ask whether someone can cover a shift, and another volunteer can answer in the group. Members can recognize who is speaking without the service handing around their phone numbers.

Is this the same as BCC texting?

“BCC texting” usually describes sending separate copies of a message while keeping recipients from seeing one another. The label alone does not tell you whether replies become group posts. Check the service’s actual reply behavior.

Apple’s native group SMS documentation describes replies arriving as individual messages, with other recipients unable to see them. That can suit an organizer collecting separate responses. It does not function as a shared SMS discussion.

Klal Chat’s open conversation mode relays member posts to the group. A reply to the group number is not private to the admin. Contact the organizer separately about personal matters.

Klal Chat also supports an announcement mode in which only admins can post. That setting limits who can publish to the group; it should not be described as a private inbox for member replies.

Hidden numbers do not mean anonymous or encrypted messages

Member-to-member number privacy is a specific protection. The admin needs the roster to manage membership, and Klal Chat needs phone numbers to route messages. A message carrying your name is also not anonymous merely because your number is hidden.

SMS is not end-to-end encrypted. Phone carriers and messaging providers handle texts along their route. Hiding a number from other members does not change those properties of the phone network.

Members can also copy, forward, or photograph the texts they receive. Someone can voluntarily include a phone number in the body of a message. Shared-number delivery cannot prevent either action.

Use a general community text group for coordination, and select a communication method appropriate to the information involved for sensitive personal discussions.

Set expectations before inviting members

A clear invitation prevents most confusion. Tell people who runs the group, what it is for, whose posts they will receive, and whether their replies go to everyone. Explain that numbers are hidden from fellow members while the organizer retains the roster.

Klal Chat is live and accepting signups. Prepare a welcome note, confirm the roster, and choose a posting mode. Test delivery and replies with a small consenting group before expanding.

  • Give the group a recognizable name and ask members to save its number.
  • Use names members recognize so replies are understandable.
  • Explain #mute, #unmute, and #exit alongside the group’s posting rules.
  • Provide a separate way to reach the organizer about membership or personal issues.

Questions about this guide

Can other Klal Chat members see my phone number?

Klal Chat delivers posts through the group’s number, so ordinary members do not receive one another’s personal numbers through group delivery. The admin has the member roster, and the service needs numbers to route texts.

Will my reply go privately to the admin?

In an open Klal Chat conversation, your post to the group number is distributed to the other members. Use a separate contact method for a private message to the organizer.

Is a hidden-number SMS group anonymous?

No. Klal Chat identifies posts with the sender’s name, and the organizer manages members’ phone numbers. Hidden numbers protect contact details from other members; they do not make a member anonymous.

Does hiding numbers encrypt the group’s texts?

No. SMS is not end-to-end encrypted. Relaying messages through a group number changes what fellow members see, not the encryption properties of SMS.
