SMS Group Pricing: What a Group Text Really Costs

Klal Chat offers "Try it free," followed by a monthly group plan. A card is required; the trial terms and first charge are shown at checkout. One organizer holds the subscription; members do not need their own paid accounts. Usage depends on group size and conversation volume. A single-segment post to a 20-person group uses 20 texts: one incoming text from the sender and 19 outgoing texts.
Klal Chat's current monthly plans
One subscription per group. One organizer holds the subscription; members do not need their own paid accounts. Their carrier's ordinary texting charges may still apply. Optional chip-in contributions go toward the organizer's next bill.
Try it free. A card is required. Checkout shows the trial period and first charge; cancel before the trial ends to avoid that charge.
| Monthly texts | Per group / month |
|---|---|
| 2,500 | $39 |
| 5,000 | $72 |
| 7,500 | $105 |
| 12,000 | $165 |
Top-ups add 1,000 texts for $14. Purchased texts roll over; monthly plan texts reset each billing period.
A 20-person chabura sending about 150 posts a month uses roughly 3,000 texts, which the $72 plan covers with its 5,000 monthly texts, and no top-up. This assumes single-segment posts; leave room for longer messages and days when the group talks more.
No automatic overage charges. You can buy more texts or enable auto-refill with a monthly cap. Without available texts, member chat pauses. Admins keep a small reserve for urgent announcements.

You can try Klal Chat free before choosing it as the group's regular conversation. A card is required, and checkout shows the trial terms and first charge. After the trial, the monthly plan includes the group's registered number and a defined SMS allowance. The current plans above show what is included.
If keeping the group free for the organizer is a requirement, compare the free offers before choosing. Confirm that the SMS service is available, where replies go, how much usage is included, and whether any payment is required later. A paid plan should be a choice your family, shul, or chabura understands before anyone commits.

One group post is more than one text
One post on the sender’s phone requires separate texts across the phone network. The group number receives the original text, then the service sends a copy to each other participating member.
For a group with 20 people, including the sender, the calculation is 1 incoming text plus 19 outgoing texts. That uses 20 texts from the group’s allowance when the post fits into one segment. If another member answers and their answer goes to the same group, that is another group post.
Count announcements, questions, answers, and acknowledgments. An estimate based only on the organizer’s posts can miss most of the activity in an open conversation.
Agree who pays before the conversation starts
In a public Imamother discussion, members questioned who would fund a busy replacement group and initially misunderstood whether pricing counted only their own posts. Later replies revisited costs after accounting for every recipient.
Make the agreement concrete: one organizer holds the Klal Chat subscription, the group chooses its purpose, and the organizer reviews a realistic usage estimate. If several family or community groups are moving, calculate each group separately.
Every group has an optional chip-in link on its billing page from the moment it is created, ready to share. Members who want to help can make a one-time payment toward the organizer's next bill. The organizer remains responsible for the subscription; chipping in does not enroll members in recurring split billing.

A simple monthly estimate
Start with this estimate: group members × total group posts in the month. Assume short, single-segment messages and that every member is participating. This is a planning example, not a promise that actual usage will exactly match it.
Suppose a chabura has 20 members and exchanges 150 short posts over a month. That uses about 3,000 texts: 20 × 150 = 3,000. The 150 posts include everyone's questions, replies, and updates combined. Count the group's actual texting days when making your estimate.
| People in the group | Total group posts in the month | Estimated monthly texts |
|---|---|---|
| 10 | 60 | 600 |
| 20 | 150 | 3,000 |
| 40 | 150 | 6,000 |
| 40 | 300 | 12,000 |
Longer messages need room in the budget
SMS has length limits, so one visible message can occupy more than one text segment. Longer messages, Hebrew or Yiddish text, and certain other characters can increase the number of segments used. A short Hebrew message does not automatically count as two texts; its length and encoding determine the count. There is a ceiling either way. A post longer than two segments — roughly 300 characters, or about 130 in Hebrew or Yiddish — is refused rather than charged, and the sender is asked to shorten it.
If every post in the 20-person example used two segments instead of one, the same activity would use about 6,000 texts rather than 3,000. In practice, groups often send a mix of message lengths.
Allow for busy days and longer posts. A short schedule update and a paragraph of learning notes have different usage. Budget for the language your group actually uses.
What the monthly plan covers
Klal Chat’s plans are monthly bundles for each group. The group’s own registered number is included, and one admin handles the bill. There is no Klal Chat subscription for each member to buy.
Members do not need a paid Klal Chat account. Their mobile carriers still treat sent and received messages as ordinary texts under their own phone plans.
Compare your usage estimate with the available bundles on the pricing page. Each group has its own plan; allowances are not pooled across separate groups.
What happens if the group runs out?
The monthly allowance refills each month. Purchased top-ups roll over, and the monthly allowance is used before those added texts. This makes a top-up useful when a normally quiet group has an unusually active period.
When the available texts run out, regular member posting pauses until more texts are added or the plan refills. Admins keep a small reserve for urgent announcements. There are no overage fees.
Optional auto-refill lets the admin authorize additional top-ups within a monthly spending limit. It is a purchasing setting, so choose the limit alongside the plan instead of treating it as unlimited texting.
Choose a plan around how the group communicates
An announcement group and a discussion group can have the same 40 members and very different usage. Estimate a realistic week first, including replies, then allow for days when plans change or the conversation is busier.
After your group starts texting, review usage rather than guessing indefinitely. If the group regularly needs extra texts, compare a larger bundle with repeated top-ups. If activity is seasonal, review the plan before the next busy period.

Questions about this guide
Does one group message count as one text?
No. In a 20-person Klal Chat group, one single-segment post uses 20 texts: one incoming from the sender and 19 outgoing to the other members. Longer posts can use additional segments.
Do Klal Chat top-ups expire at the end of the month?
Purchased top-up texts roll over. The plan’s monthly allowance refills each month and is used before purchased texts.
Is Klal Chat unlimited group texting?
Plans include a defined monthly bundle. Additional texts can be purchased, and optional auto-refill has a spending limit set by the admin. Regular member posting pauses when available texts are exhausted; admins keep a small reserve for urgent announcements.
Do group members each need a paid account?
No. One organizer holds the group subscription. Members can optionally chip in toward the organizer's next bill without taking on a recurring subscription. Their texts remain subject to their own mobile carrier plans.
