How to Move Your GroupMe SMS Group Without Leaving Anyone Behind

Moving a GroupMe SMS group means setting up the new group, confirming members' current phone numbers and willingness to join, and testing the conversation before making it the main channel. With Klal Chat, you can paste an existing name-and-number list or import a CSV, then send invitations for members to confirm. The organizer needs a browser for setup and for billing afterward; adding and removing members also works by text. Klal Chat is live and accepting signups.
1. Make a simple member checklist
Start with the people who need the group. Record a display name, a confirmed phone number, and whether the person can send and receive ordinary SMS. Keep this list with the organizer rather than posting everyone's numbers to the conversation.
Ask members to confirm their details directly. An old group can include a changed number, an inactive member, or someone who no longer needs its updates. This is a useful moment to make the list accurate.
Choose one organizer and one person members can contact for help. With Klal Chat, the organizer uses the admin website for setup and for billing afterward — the balance, top-ups, plan changes and cancellation are all there — while adding and removing members also works by text. Members participate through SMS. If your organizer uses a phone without a browser, they need regular access to one rather than a single visit.
2. Confirm the replacement is ready for your needs
Check the actual member experience, rather than stopping at the phrase “group messaging.” Everyone who needs ordinary texts should be able to receive and reply without installing an app. If your group needs announcements only, confirm how that works before inviting members.
Review the price using your expected group size and conversation volume. Ask what happens if you reach the plan's allowance. A low starting price is less useful than understanding what a normal month will cost.
Name the person responsible for the bill and agree on a monthly budget before collecting invitations. Count the whole conversation, including member replies. If your group expects to share the cost, settle that arrangement with the payer first.
Public JTech proposals included a longer-term restricted-app ecosystem, with unresolved adoption questions. A proposed roadmap is different from a service your group can test today.
Keep a candidate on your shortlist only after you know its activation status, setup requirements, reply behavior, and price. A waitlist, promised bridge, or attractive demo is a reason to keep checking; it is not a reason to stop the temporary update arrangement.
Klal Chat is live and accepting signups. Test joining and replies with a small group before setting your changeover date. If your group has already lost SMS access, keep a clearly assigned temporary way to relay essential updates until members have joined the new group.

3. Save old conversations if you need a record
Microsoft lets you request a GroupMe data export from your profile on the GroupMe website. Choose the data and conversations you want, request the export, and download it when ready. The export includes JSON files.
Think of that download as a separate archive. It does not establish that another service can import your history or recover a complete, usable contact list. Confirm member phone numbers directly and plan the new group independently.
4. Test with a few members before moving everyone
Create your Klal Chat group and start with a few volunteers, including someone whose phone has the most limited capabilities. You can paste one name and phone number per line or import a CSV. Send the invitations; each invited member joins by replying YES.
Use a harmless test message, such as “Testing our new shiur group. Please reply with your first name.” Ask the volunteers whether they received it, could identify the sender, and could reply. Have another member confirm that the reply appeared as intended.
Check the display on a basic phone as well as a smartphone. If someone cannot receive the test, confirm ordinary SMS works on their device and plan before treating the new group as ready.
Ask the payer to inspect usage after the pilot, and ask members to explain where their replies went. This checks the bill and the conversation people actually experienced, before the full roster depends on either.
- Send a short organizer message.
- Confirm each volunteer received it.
- Ask each volunteer to reply.
- Confirm the replies reach their intended audience.
- Resolve missing messages before adding the full group.
5. Explain the change in one message
Use a simple announcement with real details filled in. Send it through a channel the affected members can still receive. A link by itself is insufficient for someone who cannot use a browser.
Example: “We are moving the weekday shiur updates to a new text group on [date]. [Organizer] will send the joining instructions. Please complete those steps and confirm you receive the test message. After [date], check the new group for updates. Contact [organizer] if you need help.”
Replace every bracketed detail before sending. Use the new service's actual joining instructions; do not invent a keyword or ask people to text a number that has not been assigned and activated.
6. Close the loop after the first real update
Confirm the people who depend on SMS received the first real message. A completed invitation does not prove that the person received the update.
Keep the old group clearly labeled during the transition so members know where to post. Decide who will handle late arrivals or missed instructions. Once everyone is accounted for, use the chosen channel consistently for the purpose you agreed on.
Questions about this guide
Can I add an existing list of members to Klal Chat?
Yes. Paste one name and phone number per line or import a CSV, then send invitations. Each invited member confirms by replying YES. Use a current list with phone numbers you have confirmed with the members.
When should I stop using the old group?
Choose a changeover date after the replacement is active and members have successfully received and replied to test messages. Explain where new updates will appear and how members can get help.
