How to Run a Shiur or Chabura Group Text Without an App

Four men at a table of open sefarim, checking flip phones between them.

A shiur or chabura can coordinate through a two-way SMS group: members text the group's number, and the others receive the message with the sender's name. Klal Chat is designed for members with SMS-enabled basic phones as well as smartphones. Keep assignments and logistics in the text itself so no one needs an app to act on them.

Decide which conversations belong in the group

A learning group needs more than a stream of announcements. Someone asks which page to prepare, another offers a ride, and the host changes the room. A two-way text group puts those practical exchanges in one place for people who do not all use the same apps.

Give it a specific purpose, such as 'Tuesday chabura: preparation, location and attendance.' Decide whether short learning questions belong there too.

Make joining work from the phones people already carry

Klal Chat members participate through ordinary text messages. They can accept an invitation by replying YES or use the group's JOIN code. They do not need a member account, app or browser. If a new member has not supplied a display name, follow the name prompt before trying to post.

An SMS-enabled kosher phone can be suitable, but the actual device, plan and restrictions must allow the group's messages, and the number itself must be a US or Canadian (+1) number — Klal Chat cannot invite any other. Include at least one representative basic phone in your initial test. Ask that person to read a message and send a reply, not merely confirm that a notification appeared.

The organizer uses the admin website to set the group up and to keep it running: the balance, top-ups, plan changes and cancellation all live there. Arrange that ongoing browser access even if the people leading and attending the shiur prefer to participate entirely by text.

Write an assignment that stands on its own

Put the source reference, preparation request and meeting details in the message so every member has the assignment on their phone.

A useful sample is: 'Tuesday chabura, 8:30 pm at the usual room. Prepare the first two paragraphs on page 12 of our booklet. Bring one question.' If the location is unfamiliar, include the address or give a person to call for directions.

If members have different editions, agree on a common way to identify the passage instead of relying on page numbers alone.

Keep two-way replies useful to the whole chabura

In an open Klal Chat group, replies go to the group. That is helpful when an answer changes everyone's preparation; it is less useful when two people are settling a private ride arrangement. Explain this once at the beginning so members know where their words will appear.

Include context in replies: 'Page 12: do you mean the second paragraph too?' is clearer than 'That one also?'

  • Keep a question in the group if the answer will help everyone prepare.
  • Move an individual payment or personal arrangement to a direct conversation.
  • Send a fresh, complete correction when a time or assignment changes.
  • Agree who makes the final call when different meeting times are suggested.

Budget for the conversation, not just the reminder

A chabura with several replies uses more texts than one weekly notice. Each group post produces texts to other members and counts the sender's incoming text. Estimate the whole group's activity when choosing a plan, then check actual usage.

Hebrew and Yiddish are supported. Long messages or non-Latin characters use additional text segments, and a post longer than two segments — roughly 300 characters, or about 130 in Hebrew or Yiddish — is refused rather than sent, so shorter source references and focused questions matter for more than readability. Consult current pricing for the details.

Welcome a new member with the current assignment and the next meeting details so they can join the learning right away.

Prepare the group before its first conversation

Klal Chat is live and accepting signups. Choose the admin, agree on the group's purpose and prepare the invitation and first assignment. Test joining and replies with a few consenting members before inviting the complete list.

Questions about this guide

Can members of a shiur reply without an app?

Yes. In an open group, members send ordinary texts to the group number and the other members receive them. Their phone and line must allow the required SMS messages.
