Group texting basics

A WhatsApp Alternative for People Without Smartphones

A family gathered around an older man reading a group message on his flip phone, another flip phone open beside him.

If a member's phone can only send and receive ordinary text messages, a separate SMS group is a practical alternative to a WhatsApp group. WhatsApp conversations require WhatsApp access and an internet connection; they do not arrive as regular SMS. Klal Chat is built for members who participate by text. The organizer needs a browser for setup and for billing afterward; adding and removing members also works by text. Klal Chat is live and accepting signups.

Start with the person your current group leaves out

A family can have several iPhones, a few Android phones, and one relative with a basic phone. A shiur can include people who use filtered smartphones alongside people who deliberately use SMS-only devices. The useful question is how everyone will receive the same practical information.

Ask the member what their phone can actually do. Can they receive a normal text? Can they reply? Can they open websites or install an app? Those answers are more useful than a label such as smartphone, flip phone, or kosher phone.

If everyone can use WhatsApp, it may already meet the group's needs. If someone needs ordinary SMS, choose a communication method that includes that person without requiring them to change phones.

Make the decision with the whole group

An Imamother discussion contrasted mostly basic-phone neighborhood groups with mostly smartphone carpools. Participants disagreed about switching and payment; the group's device mix mattered.

For your own group, write down how many members need SMS, which members will use it willingly, and who will cover the service bill. Ask whether the group wants one shared conversation or only a reliable channel for essential updates.

Agree on that purpose before creating the new group. Moving a single member to SMS while the conversation continues elsewhere still leaves someone responsible for copying every important change. If the whole group chooses SMS, name the updates and replies that belong there.

WhatsApp and regular texts are different services

WhatsApp requires an active internet connection to send and receive messages. Its supported-device requirements also matter. Access through linked devices is a separate option for people who can use them; it does not turn an SMS-only phone into a WhatsApp client.

Receiving a verification code by text is not the same as receiving a WhatsApp conversation by text. The code helps with account access. It does not create SMS delivery for the group's ongoing messages.

Klal Chat gives the group a separate SMS conversation. Agree to post shared updates to its group number so everyone can receive and reply by text.

Why a regular group text may not behave as expected

Typing several names into a phone's messaging app can result in different types of conversation. The behavior depends on the devices, settings, and carrier support.

Apple distinguishes group SMS from group MMS: in group SMS, replies are delivered individually rather than shared with all recipients. Group MMS supports shared responses, but members need the appropriate device and service support.

A dedicated SMS group service handles this differently by receiving texts through the service and relaying them to the intended group members. For the member, the useful experience is simple: send a regular text to the group's number and receive the group's messages through SMS.

Before choosing any service, confirm how replies work. Some texting products are designed for announcements or private replies to an organizer. That may be appropriate for a mailing-list style update, but it is different from a family conversation where everyone should see the replies.

What an SMS group can replace

For practical coordination, the essentials are often a short message and a short reply. “The shiur will meet downstairs tonight” or “Who can collect the books?” gives everyone a clear update they can answer by text.

Set expectations about what belongs in the group. Put times, locations, and changes in the text itself so every member has the details.

Klal Chat members participate by text. The organizer uses the admin website for setup and for billing afterward; adding and removing members also works by text.

  • Use short written updates that make sense on their own.
  • Include the day and time when a schedule could be ambiguous.
  • Ask for a specific reply when confirmation is needed.
  • Choose a separate way to share material that cannot be conveyed through text.

Choose where essential updates will live

Keeping WhatsApp for some people and SMS for others creates an extra job: someone must reliably copy each important change. A single shared SMS group can simplify that arrangement when everyone involved has supported texting.

The group can still use other tools for other purposes. What matters is agreeing that essential updates for this group appear where all its members can receive them.

Before moving, identify an organizer with ongoing browser access for setup and billing, review the current pricing, and test the service on the least capable phone. Klal Chat is live and accepting signups. Confirm that members can join, receive messages, and reply before choosing a changeover date.

Questions about this guide

Does no app mean the organizer can set up Klal Chat entirely by text?

No. Klal Chat members participate through SMS. The organizer needs a browser for setup and for billing, though adding and removing members works by text. Klal Chat is live and accepting signups.

Will an SMS group work on every kosher phone?

The phone and its plan must support ordinary incoming and outgoing SMS, and applicable filtering or carrier restrictions still matter. A talk-only device cannot participate by text. Klal Chat accepts US and Canadian (+1) numbers only.
